TECHNOLOGIES

The baseline of the UNITE technological platform is built by three distinct technologies:
Microcosmos, MTS, and m-learning, brought into the project by the partners EMS, IGD, and CTAD respectively.

Microcosmos (pilot resulted from the IST “School+” project) is a collaboration and communication environment, allowing teachers, pupils, as well as parents and school visitors to communicate through a unique schooling ‘entry point’. Along with the platform's in-built features, which include a customizable visual interface, multi-language support, robust multi-user management and various user communication tools, Microcosmos (through its modular approach) intends to fit any specific educational environment, supporting ease and flexibility of use.

The Modular Training System MTS (resulting from two successful Telematics projects) has been evolving through the years to a modular learning management system (LMS), specially developed for situations in which special requirements have to be met, constantly monitoring the state-of-the-art in order to always be one step ahead. MTS supports SCORM-compliant repositories, as defined in SCORM, and offers maximum reusability, with all its modules being web-based and platform-independent. According to the special requirements in a specific application scenario, these modules can be combined and integrated to build a complete learning management system. For the school, a ‘light’ MTS system will be adapted and integrated into UNITE, able to manage the pupils’ and the schools’ learning resources, objects and experiences.

M-learning is a highly new research area, putting the IST “m-learning” project and its research outcomes into the UNITE project. The little chunks of learning via the mobile phones are SCORM compliant. In the UNITE project, mobile phone technologies and their very specific learning content will link up to Microcosmos and to MTS, supporting a variety of educational scenarios and learning situations.

The UNITE project is partially supported by the European Community under the
Information Society Technologies (IST) priority of the 6th Framework Programme for R&D
